Job Summary:

The Project Engineer/Metallurgist will perform metallurgical evaluations and failure analyses of metal food, beverage, and aerosol packaging. The position will also investigate manufacturing issues/customer complaints to determine the root cause.  The intent is to provide the business with an objective analysis that will emphasize the effects of design and material changes or to determine the driving force for customer issues in the field.

 

Job Duties:

  • Champion metal (aluminum, steel, other) supplier partnerships for long-term benefit of Trivium Packaging (innovation, quality improvements, service improvements, product standardization).
  • Evaluate the impact of package parameters on package shelf life, for both food and beverage.
  • Evaluate new engineering and development designs for down gauging projects or new package development programs.
  • Conduct routine metallurgical analyses on can, ends, and other metal packaging as needed.
  • Perform optical and scanning electron microscopic analysis in support of product shelf-life determination and failure analyses.
  • Perform root cause analysis of can/end manufacturing defects or process issues to aid manufacturing personnel in diagnosing and correcting process issues.
  • Objective qualitative and quantitative analysis of customer complaints related to cans, ends, or double seaming processes to determine what caused the incident and how to facilitate a resolution between Trivium Packaging and the customer.
  • Compare performance of design/material changes and make recommendations for further development or improvement based on observations conducted during performance testing.
  • Maintain testing equipment and develop new testing methods as needed.
  • Perform all other job duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or Metallury
  • 0-5 years of work experience in metallurgy, preferably in the packaging industry
  • Metallographic preparation and evaluations are essential.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy
  • Corrosion testing experience is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience generating technical reports and documentation.
  • Able to work in fast-paced environment and able to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent verbal-written, interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers and team.

Work Environment:

This position will primarily work in a plant-like environment where the noise level is usually very loud outside of the office area. Temperature can range from extreme cold (<40 degrees) to extreme heat (>90 degrees). The atmosphere contains fumes, dust, and odors. Employees must wear hearing protection, gloves, and all other assigned Personal Protective Equipment. The position will also need to lift and carry up to 15 pounds on occasion.
